Fiber lasers are increasingly used in various fields of science and technology. The main industrial areas of use of ytterbium fiber lasers are marking, cutting, welding, heat treatment. Moreover, the range of tasks implemented in various branches of science and technology using these lasers is constantly growing. This is due to a number of advantages of fiber lasers in comparison with other types of lasers: they do not require special maintenance and alignment, have effective heat dissipation, are characterized by stability of parameters, have a high output beam quality, small dimensions and weight. In this work, students will get acquainted with the basics of assembling a ytterbium fiber laser, study the physical principles of laser operation, determine the laser threshold, output power, and study the spectroscopic characteristics of a fiber laser. They will receive a pulsed laser operation by modulating the pump current and using passive modulation.
